More Information around Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy is an exercise-based therapy program. It is like physical therapy, only for the muscles of the mouth, tongue, and face. The exercises are designed specifically to train proper breathing, speaking, chewing and swallowing.

The 4 Goals of Myofunctional Therapy

1. Promote nasal breathing

2. Lip seal

3. Tongue on the roof of mouth (proper tongue rest position)

4. Proper swallowing pattern

Common Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders

Tongue Thrust

● Is the tongue pushing forward through the front teeth during swallowing, speech, or at rest. This can lead to muscle strain and orthodontic issues. Often the tongue is thrusting to make room in a constricted airway

Tongue Tie

● Is a restriction of the tissue located under the tongue, limiting the tongue’s movement and functions. It can interfere with oral development, feeding, and speech.

Mouth Breathing

● Leads to many consequences such as abnormal facial and dental development, dry mouth, dental disease( cavities and periodontal disease), increased risk for behavioral problems, ADHD, depression, and sleep apnea. Our breathing re-education and myofunctional program can help.

Sleep Disorders and TMJ Pain

● Research is finding that there is a link between sleep disorders (sleep apnea/insomnia), bruxism (tooth grinding/clenching), jaw & facial pain, acid reflux, headaches and migraines. Myofunctional therapists can help identify airway issues that are the root cause, and work to treat breathing issues and jaw stability and function along with a dental/medical team.
